Thales fournit des systèmes de commande de trains par télécommunications (CBTC) et des systèmes d’enclenchement destinés au secteur des transports en commun sur voie ferrée à l'échelle mondiale. Le centre de compétences pour la signalisation ferroviaire urbaine est situé au centre-ville de Toronto. Key Accountabilities

  • To provide direction and advise on technical safety issues and ensure that the system design meets contractual and product safety requirements.
  • To review and approve the System Safety Plan and ensure the safety activities are in accordance to company’s process, best practices and applicable standards.
  • To provide technical leadership to the Safety team by defining the Safety Case Strategy, developing safety methods and sharing expert level knowledge.
  • To coordinate the resolution of technical safety issues, propose cost-effective solutions and ensure the residual risk is tolerable.
  • To work effectively with other disciplines and ensure the design incorporates safety concepts and principles, and the verification and validation evidence produced throughout the system lifecycle is sufficient to demonstrate safety. To review and approve the Safety Case.
  • To perform hazard and safety analyses, modeling and simulation studies to verify the train control system is safe.
  • To develop and maintain safety management process and guidelines and coach others.

Key Tasks

  • Recognize opportunities for, and encourage, cross-use and cross-acceptance of safety certifications and Safety Cases.
  • Represent Safety in technical meetings involving safety-related issues.  Participate in, influence, and approve design decisions impacting or potentially impacting safety.
  • Exercise safety leadership on the product and/or project, and is accountable for the technical safety of the train control system.
  • Prepares safety requirement specifications by analyzing and decomposing customer safety requirements.
  • Perform technical trade off evaluations to identify the system safety engineering design choices with associated advantages and disadvantages.
  • Review and approve the Hazard Log and associated hazard analyses.
  • Identify and anticipate risks and opportunities, and propose mitigation actions.
  • Prepares technical proposals, reports, presentations, change evaluations and responses to customer requests. Provides technical Bids and Proposals support as assigned.
  • Works with customers and Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) to achieve safety approval and acceptance of the train control system.
  • Defines processes and best practices covering the entire safety activities and system lifecycle.
  • Trains, leads and supervises junior members of the RAMS Engineering team.
  • Supervise other Safety Specialists and consultants by defining their work, methodology and approach, monitoring their progress, and directing them on priorities.
  • Resolves safety related issues by participating in the Safety Committee, as required.
  • Ensures that safety requirements can be verified; review safety test procedures and reports to confirm sufficient coverage of safety requirements.
  • Verify the safety of the system by performing:
  • Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA);
  • Functional Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FFMEA);
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA);
  • Functional Hazard Analysis (FnHA);
  • Functional Safety Analysis (FnSA); and
  • Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard Operability (HAZOP) studies.
  • Accountable for performing the work correctly within cost and schedule limits as defined in approved Work Package.
  • Provide support to resolve safety related issues by participating in the Safety Committee, as required.
  • Report directly to the Manager RAMS Engineering and liaises with the Chief Safety Architect, and work closely with other team members, both in Safety team and from other functional teams, to meet project objectives.

Key Requirements

  • B.Sc. Electrical Engineering / Computer Science or equivalent
  • Knowledge of fixed and moving block signalling principles, relay based and computer based interlocking design, and control tables.
  • Experience in design interface to wayside (e.g., points, track circuits, signals) and rolling stock equipment.
  • Familiarity software on real time safety critical systems.
  • 10+ years train control experience and/or automatic control systems in other industry.
  • Knowledge of safety program and safety lifecycle for complex (safety critical) systems.
  • Experience with train control systems and the associated hazard, safety and risk analysis.
  • Good understanding of safety principles, and ability to evaluate safety and operational impact.
  • Experience with safety standards (CENELEC, MIL, MoD, IEEE, IEC), methods and techniques (FMEA/FMECA, FTA, FHA).
  • Good technical writing skills, good communication and analytical skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral.
  • Computer skills, MS Office; DOORS; Item ToolKit, RAM Commander, Isograph.
  • Knowledge of Thales products is desirable.
  • Safety analysis methods and techniques – FTA, FMEA/FMECA, HAZID/HAZOP, PHA, SHA, FnHA
  • Proof of Safety/Safety Case – GPSC, GASC, SASC
  • Safety standards EN 50126/128/129/159
  • Approves safety qualifications of Thales products, external interfaces and installed systems.
  • Selection of technical solutions.
  • Evaluate performance of technical staff.
  • Define work packages/methods/plan/techniques for junior group members.
  • Manages and schedules work plan within budget & time allowances given.
  • Participate in engineering activities ensuring the "built-in safety" of Thales train control systems.
  • Utilizing internationally recognized hazard and safety analysis techniques to develop and follow through the completion of formal Proof of Safety of Thales solutions.
  • Be part of a team that is responsible for the timely and effective execution of the combined tasks and activities of safety management and safety engineering to achieve the system safety requirements throughout the system life cycle.
  • Relevant new technology is incorporated in design/enhancement of products
  • System requirements are accurately and completely defined
  • System design meets the customer and regulatory requirements
  • To maintain high personal productivity while working interactively with many other suppliers and user groups.
  • To meet deadlines on the development programs involving new design challenges.
  • To adjust work plans to frequent injections of unplanned work activities.
  • To produce accurate cost estimates and workable functional designs in a frequently changing environment.
  • To keep up to date on new analysis techniques
  • To plan, drive and perform specific safety activities in accordance with the company process and safety schedule. To report progress and escalate issues to Chief Safety Architect and RAMS Manager.
  • To fulfil the role of Work Package Manager (WPM) and/or Project Safety Manager, as defined by company process, and as required.
  • To cooperate closely and effectively with key stakeholders (requirements manager, designer, implementer, verifier, validator, assessor) in order to sure functional and technical safety of the solution and compliance to applicable standards.
  • To develop new and creative methods for analyzing design and problem-solving skills in order to identify effective design solutions to meet operational and safety objectives.
  • To work with others as a team member and to promote company safety policy and RAMS Engineering image within the company and with customers.
  • To keep up to date on new analysis techniques, methods, best-practices, process improvements and applicable standards.
  • To manage time and priorities to meet project milestones and coordinate the work of other Safety Specialists.
